Description

The Dauer 962LM was a road 'supercar' derived from the Porsche 962C Group C race car. The Le Mans regulations as they stood at the time allowed GT cars based on limited production numbers. So, the race car was derived from a road car derived from a race car!
This project started with a Starter kit purchased second hand. The tail fins were broken and I had great difficulty fixing them in place permanently - they kept detaching themselves at the slightest touch.
I searched for another kit and eventually found the PM kit of the road version. Therefore, mirroring the real thing, I set about converting the road car to the race version. The Starter kit donated a number of parts to the project.
The chassis was modified by completely removing the integrally cast road seats and cockpit floor. A new floor and chassis side members was made from plastic card. The seats came from the Starter kit. The silenced road exhausts were removed and replaced with lengths of brass tubing. Additional cockpit detailing included a scratch built extinguisher and bulkhead mounted electronics boxes.
The wheels in both kits looked a bit small to me, especially at the front so I purchased a set of Le Mans Miniatures replacements. The front wheel arches are also a bit small so they needed enlarging to accept the new wheels. I added a thick piece of plastic card to the top of each arch, blended them in with filler and I then used a grinding bit to open up the inside of the wheel openings.
Other modifications include adding the tow loops, oil filler point, race number lights, and the rear wing which used parts from both kits.
Decals were mostly from Patto's Place as the bulk of the Starter decals were not quite the right shape for the PM kit.
This was a fairly lengthy project but I'm pleased with the end result.
