These two kits from Provence Moulage are part of an expanding range of interest boats. Most are classic racing Hydroplanes but recent additions have been an out board powered JPS Europa Runabout and the Porsche Design Concept Kineo from 1985. I have always had an interest in wooden boats and my interest in racing Hydroplanes really came about when I was involved in a small way in improving safety in the 80's with the introduction of the safety cell.
The kits
These kits are not to an accurate scale being an approximate 43rd scale. The kits are very similar to the more familiar Car kits from Provence Moulage consisting most of the cast parts in resin and the rudder assemblies in photo etch. The Ferrari Boat in fact did have the exhaust system cast in white metal, which reflects a growing use of metal parts in PM kits. I suspect these parts were originally cast in resin when the kit first came out.

Building the kits was simplicity itself, The Maserati Boat was primed with white primer for easy coverage of the yellow deck coat and the Ferrari boat was primed with red. It is always worth considering which colour primer to use, as I like to keep topcoat as thin as possible to avoid losing fine panel lines and sharp details under multiple coats of paint.
The decals are of a high quality but those of the Ferrari had been damaged in the packing and the deck decals were cracked. PM kindly provided me with a spare set but I was able to use the damaged set with out problem. The underside of the Ferrari boat was painted a light brown, as the decals for the sides and transom are clear with a dark grain.

The Maserati boat side and transom decals are solid colour and so the underside of this boat was painted a darker brown.
The kits were built straight from the box other than I replaced the resin exhausts tail pipes on the Maserati boat with lengths of aluminum pipe and also used some photo etch parts from my bits box as fasteners on the Ferrari Boat. Renaissance Steering wheels were also used on each kit.
